Frequently asked questions
- What is the BattleTech Map?
- A free, interactive star map of the BattleTech universe. It draws the realms of the Inner Sphere and the Periphery as territories computed from the worlds they hold in each year, so you can watch borders shift, follow wars and battles, plan jump routes and open any world with its Sarna.net article.
- Which years does the map cover?
- Ownership runs from 2100 to 3152, from the early days of interstellar expansion through the Succession Wars, the Clan Invasion and the Jihad into the ilClan era. The time bar jumps between the years in which something changed, and an animated playback of the borders (the chronicle) runs across any span you choose.
- Can I see the Inner Sphere in a specific year, like 3025 or 3050?
- Yes. Pick the year on the time bar, or open it straight from the address: ?year=3025 shows the Inner Sphere before the Fourth Succession War, ?year=3050 the first year of the Clan Invasion. Every year in which a world changed hands has its own map, with the wars and battles of that year.
- Where does the data come from?
- From the Sarna.net community wiki, including the Sarna Unified Cartography Kit (SUCKit) for system coordinates. Realm colours follow the MegaMek project; house and unit crests come from the Inner Sphere map at gruese.de and from Camo Specs Online. Every world links back to its source article, and the map's credits name a contact for errors.
- Can I link to a specific year, world or battle?
- Yes. The address bar always holds the current view: the year, the open panels, the highlighted faction, the zoom and the camera, even a running playback of the borders. Copy it or use the share button, and whoever opens the link sees the same moment of the map.
- Is this an official BattleTech product?
- No. It is a free fan project. BattleTech is a registered trademark of The Topps Company, Inc.; the tabletop game is published by Catalyst Game Labs. This project is not affiliated with or endorsed by either.
